The Don and Jean Sloan Youth Service Scholarship

The Don and Jean Sloan Youth Service Scholarship is awarded through Youth Volunteer Corps Headquarters. The $1,000 scholarship is open to active YVC volunteers who have demonstrated excellence in volunteerism and leadership and who are committed to making a difference in their communities.

2022 Scholarship Recipient: Akilah Frye

Akilah, a volunteer with YVC in Hampton Roads, served 254 hours with YVC while balancing a variety of other volunteer and extracurricular activities. Akilah joined YVC at the age of 13, quickly became a leader, and started a YVC club at her own school. During her time with YVC, Akilah was awarded the 100-in-One Award for 100 hours of service in one year, was a member of the YVC Hampton Roads Youth Advisory Board, and was a member of the YVC International Youth Advisory Board.

Akilah was selected as a Bank of America Student Leader for 2022 and will stay involved at her YVC in Hampton Roads as a Team Leader where she will continue to shine her light and lead youth in volunteering.

College Plans:

Akilah plans to attend the University of Mississippi in the fall and pursue journalism with an emphasis in fashion promotion and media, with dreams of becoming a fashion editor.

Requirements

  • Must be a youth volunteer with a Youth Volunteer Corps program.
  • Must be a senior in high school or a first-year college/university student to apply.
  • Must demonstrate good character and leadership.
  • Must have plans to continue volunteer service in college and beyond.
  • Preference will be given to youth volunteers who have completed at least 100 hours of service during a two-year period with any YVC program throughout the U.S. or Canada.

Criteria

Scholarship recipients will be selected based on community service activities and volunteer work with YVC, as well as a demonstration of leadership.

  • Two references (not family members) who fill out the reference form. (You are responsible for ensuring that their reference arrives on time.)
