The Don and Jean Sloan Youth Service Scholarship

The Don and Jean Sloan Youth Service Scholarship is awarded through Youth Volunteer Corps Headquarters. The $1,000 scholarship is open to active YVC volunteers in their final year of high school who have demonstrated excellence in volunteerism and leadership and who are committed to making a difference in their communities.

“My parents showed me the value of giving back to the community, and this scholarship rewards a young person with the same spirit.”

– Julie Sloan, who launched the scholarship in honor of her parents

2025 Scholarship Recipient: Addison McKittrick

Addison, a volunteer  YVC in Reading, PA, began her journey with YVC through the affiliate’s annual City Park cleanups. Her involvement deepened when she joined YVC Reading’s Youth Advisory Board, quickly distinguishing herself as a driving force behind one of its most critical initiatives: stewarding a $15,000 youth-led grantmaking process through the Berks County Community Foundation.

In addition to her leadership at the local level, Addison served on the YVC network’s International Youth Advisory Board (IYAB), served as a project lead with the Youth Mental Health Ambassadors initiative in Reading, and was unanimously selected by staff as the YVC student liaison to the VOiCEup Berks Board of Directors.

Addison also competed in cross country, track and field, and basketball; served as president of her school’s Business Club; captained the Science Olympiad team; and held the role of Editor In Chief for her high school newspaper, among other accomplishments.

Through more than 255 hours of service, Addison has developed resilience and a genuine passion for service—qualities that will continue to shine in her future endeavors.

College Plans: Addison will attend Drexel University where she will major in Biology and minor in Biochemistry.
