"Back-Up Plans for your Back Pocket: Tips for Engaging Youth During Downtime" - Katie Morgan | Mariner A
We all have experienced that anxiety-inducing moment when plans go sideways, weather halts progress or our amazing youth volunteers finish a project in record time… So what do YOU do when you need to keep youth engaged for an extended period of time on a moment’s notice? This workshop will provide some go-to activities that ensure youth stay actively involved in purposeful service-learning (and not scrolling on their phones) without skipping a beat! The last 30 minutes of this workshop will be used to share YOUR favorite “Plan B” (and C, D, E) activities.
This will be an interactive workshop, with attendees participating in each activity. Time at the end will be devoted to exchanging best tips and tools for back-up activities at service projects, all of which will be compiled and shared afterward.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.
Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

This session will explore strategies and practices to cultivate a sense of belonging for youth. Research shows that a strong sense of belonging positively impacts youth engagement, academic achievement, and overall well-being. Participants will engage in interactive discussions and hands-on activities to explore the intersection of belonging and meaningful volunteer opportunities. Leave this session with practical tools and ideas to foster a culture of belonging among youth to drive both connection and a commitment to service.
"Helping Youth Visualize Their Future" - Kristin Stephens | Cape Henry C
Did you know that visualizing goals helps people be more successful in achieving them? This engaging and interactive workshop is designed to help you help program leaders work with youth to visualize their dreams, set goals, and include aspirations to help youth transform them into reality. This hands-on, craft-forward session will guide program leaders through a process of creating a vision board, a powerful tool for goal setting and personal development. You will learn how to implement this tool to help youth set goals, integrate service-learning experiences, and enhance youth leadership skills. By the end of the workshop, program leaders will have a new tool to help youth have a clear, visual roadmap to help them reach their goals. All supplies are included.

Every struggle and heartbreak we go through is for a purpose and can be used to connect with people across the globe! This session will break down how to understand the value of your story, how to share it, and how to inspire others around you to do so! This workshop is lead YVC Reading’s Youth Mental Health Ambassadors and will include education on the current state of mental health. This will include statistics, signs, how to assist, misconceptions, and open dialogue.
"Empowering Youth Leaders: Cultivating Cultural Intelligence (CQ) in Teen Volunteers" - Heather Frommack | False Cape B
This engaging 90-minute workshop is designed to equip adult leaders of Youth Volunteer Corps with the knowledge and skills to foster cultural intelligence (CQ) in teen volunteers, a vital competency for effective leadership in our diverse and interconnected world.
In today’s complex volunteer environments, guiding teens to understand themselves and others is crucial for developing cultural sensitivity and adaptability. This workshop provides adult leaders with strategies and practical tools to enhance their own CQ and effectively nurture it in young leaders. Through interactive activities, engaging discussions, and collaborative problem-solving, participants will develop strategies for cultivating cultural intelligence in teen leaders. These skills will enhance their ability to mentor youth and prepare the next generation for leadership roles in our increasingly globalized society.

Led by Reagan Wall, the Media Team Coordinator for YVCHR (Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads), this session promises to provide tools to unlock your creative potential. Reagan, an advocate for youth empowerment, brings to light the profound impact service can have on fostering positive change both in the community and for those that serve.
Through the Creative Change model, Reagan has pioneered a dynamic youth media team within YVCHR. This team harnesses the power of storytelling to shed light on the invaluable contributions of youth volunteers, showcasing how their efforts are driving tangible improvements in our local community.
During this engaging workshop, participants will explore storytelling techniques and gain practical skills to implement them. Through hands-on activities, attendees will learn how to use a camera, basic lighting techniques, and craft storyboards to guide their creative vision. Additionally, participants will delve into the intricacies of the editing workflow, discovering how to seamlessly weave together visuals and narratives to evoke emotion and inspire action. By honing these skills, attendees will be empowered to document their journey of youth service with authenticity and impact that can be measured, amplifying their voices and catalyzing change within their communities.
