Project of the Year: YVC of Anderson, SC

10.29.15 Project of the Year

Each year, youth serve on thousands of different projects with Youth Volunteer Corps across the U.S. and Canada. From projects at soup kitchens to city parks, animal shelters to retirement homes, we have witnessed an incredible variety of ways YVC Youth Volunteers are serving their local communities (3,691 different projects in the last year, to be exact!).

Each year at the YVC Summit, we announce the Project of the Year Award to honor the most creative, engaging and impactful of these projects across the YVC Network.

Congratulations to YVC of Anderson, hosted by United Way of Anderson County, for the 2015 Project of the Year! They earned this honor for their project with Developmental Center for Exceptional Children.

Anderson 2015 Project of the Year (5)

We loved this project because Youth Volunteers were the ones that found a need for service that usually goes unnoticed.

YVC had served at this local preschool for kids with disabilities before. The center’s staff recognized that parents of kids with disabilities have a challenging job and don’t often get a break, so they planned to serve a meal to these families.

Before going to help with this meal, one Youth Volunteer realized yet another need. He thought that the center’s staff also have challenging jobs and may not get breaks very often either, so they deserved recognition too!

YVC decided to serve a meal to both groups—the center’s staff and the families. They served two meals last year, one near Thanksgiving and another near Christmas, to give them all a break and thank them for their perseverance.

Here at YVC we work to make sure that every project is driven by youth ideas and passion, and this project is a perfect example of how empowering a service experience can be when youth-led from start to finish!

The 2015 Project of the Year was announced during the Award Ceremony at the YVC Summit. We’re celebrating the 2015 award winners this week on the blog.
